The World Car Award nominees were announced at the Geneva International Motor Show. Three finalists each were short listed for the seventh edition of the awards in four categories – World Car of the Year, World Performance Car, World Green Car and World Car Design of the Year. The winners for these categories were announced at the ongoing New York International Auto Show. Here is the list of the winners in each category: 2011 World Car of the Year: Nissan Leaf – The car was nominated for the World Car of the year award at the Geneva Motor Show recently and the winners for the same were announced at the ongoing New York Auto Show. Nissan Leaf has earlier been rated best-in-class for the environment due to its zero tailpipe emissions. The Nissan Leaf has 25kWh lithium-ion batteries and according to Nissan a 240 volt 13A domestic supply takes 11 hours to charge the car while at 400 volt, 50kW the charging time comes down to about eight hours. Leaf has good interiors that include a white dashboard and in the absence of a traditional engine the Leaf has absolutely no cabin noise. However, Leaf customers have complained about the car failing to restart after being turned off because of an air-conditioning sensor problem recently and the company is trying to figure out the root cause of the problem. 2011 World Performance Car: Ferrari 458 Italia – The car was chosen from an initial entry list of 14 new cars and ultimately three finalists were announced including – Ferrari 458 Italia, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, and Porsche 911 Turbo. The 458 Italia replaced the F430 Fiorano, the car is powered by a V8 motor capable of generating 570 metric horsepower and beats competition hands down in handling and looks. The car is now available in India as well. 2011 World Car Design of the Year: Aston Martin Rapide – The car beat 51 contenders to win the world car design award this year. The car is now available in India and comes with a 6-litre V12 motor capable of producing 469bhp at 6000rpm and 61.24kgm of torque. The car does the 0 to100kph sprint in 4.9sec and touches a top speed of 296kph. It has an aluminum VH (vertical horizontal) body structure and flaunts huge 20 inch wheels. 2011 World Green Car: Chevrolet Volt – The car has a EPA rating of 93 mpg when running on electric power only, and 37 mpg while on its gasoline powered engine. The car's electric-only range as printed on its label is 35 miles. It is a four passenger, four-door hatchback that is operated by electricity produced by an on-board battery or gasoline engine that takes about eight hours to charge in normal 120V current. With a 240V charging point the battery can be charged in three hours. The carmaker has not compromised on any safety feature and Volt is going to be loaded with ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), traction control system, anti-skid system and air bags for both curtain and front side.
