Power Steering Problem on Golf GTI MK3?
Hi, Having a Problem with my Golf GTI MK3, When I drove around a corner this morning in wet weather, the power steering appeared to go all tight after i had driven through a big puddle(almost as if the engine died, but it hadn't) When I got around the corner i stopped the car and turned the steering from left-right full lock with the engine still running and the steering wheel seemed to 'judder' for a few seconds and then went back to normal.
I continued to drive down the road until i went trough another big puddle then the same thing happened again.
Does this sound like a steering belt problem or is it the pump or something worse? Dont want to drive the car home from work if its not safe and would prefer to call in my recovery people (can they fix this at the roadside?)
RePo.... Not to worry. What you felt is the LACK OF power steering! The belt got completely soaked in water, which is a lubricant of sorts, and allowed the belt to spin and not turn the pulley, which stopped the power assist you usually feel. The "shuddering" is the belt slipping and not slipping as it dries off by the friction that is normally created when the belt rides on the pulley!
So dont worry man, just stop driving through large enough puddles to splash that bad against the belt side of the engine.
BTW, I've done it a few times with my MK2 GTi..!!
