Do you own a Volkswagen or are you thinking of buying one but are not quite sure what the brand is about? Let this article tell you all you need to know about this popular German car brand! Volkswagen, or simply VW as it is commonly known, has been on the scene since 1937 and its name means "people's car". The German Labour Front (Deustche Arbeitsfront) established the company to fill the gap in the market for reasonably priced cars aimed at ordinary people. The luxury car market was saturated and Volkswagen began as a means of creating a car for everybody. It eventually became government sponsored under Adolf Hitler, who wanted to make a "people's car" that would transport a family of five in a car that could operate at speeds of up to 62 mph. The car would be available at 990 Reichsmark and provide affordable transport for families across Germany.

A new factory was opened sponsored by the state and Ferdinand Porsche was drafted in as a head engineer to oversee production. Porsche set about creating a people's car with reliable parts and an efficient fuel system. The body of the new car is perhaps one of the most famous vehicle designs of all time – the Volkswagen Beetle. Production ceased when the factories were converted to cope with the manufacture of military vehicles during World War II. Following the war many English soldiers imported their VW Beetles back into the country, popularising the brand with a new market. After Allied troops occupied Germany the Wolfsburg VW factory came into British hands and was integrated into the country's recovery programme. It even became a spearhead for regeneration in West Germany and began exporting the cars to American consumers in 1949.

During the 1960s and 70s the car developed its product lines and created the Type 3 models and later the Type 4 models which changed the body shape of the vehicles considerably. In 1974 the VW Golf set the market on fire. Trends in buying and Volkswagen Golf leasing rose with demand and in 1975 the popular VW Polo followed. Since then the company has progressed to take a market share of 20 percent, staking its claim as a major manufacturer of universally popular cars.
